5.1

Objectives

Open-ended practice of directions and language relating to places in town.

Materials
Worksheet in Acrobat Reader format (183 bytes)

Plan of town, with two places already labelled, on OHP acetate.

1 Prepare by brainstorming first town vocabulary (nouns with article), then prepositions. Write them on the board in two lists, then invite or cue combinations of prepositions and places from your class.

2 Using the town plan on OHP as the focus, invite the class to tell you where places might be located, e.g. Das Rathaus ist gegenüber der Post, and write them on the plan. You might need to prompt them with questions such as Wo ist die Bank? or Ist der Dom neben dem Rathaus?

3 Once the plan is complete, leave it on the OHP and ask learners to work in pairs; A gives directions to a particular (unnamed) place, B follows the directions and names the place.

5.2

Objectives

Encouraging accuracy and familiarity with larger blocks of language.

Materials
Worksheet in Acrobat Reader format (183 bytes)

Pre-printed phrases, cut and placed in envelopes.

1 Give each pair an envelope, containing all the cut phrases and ask them to work together to match the two halves and form sentences.

2 Encourage them to form as many dialogues as they can with the completed sentences – you’ll need to monitor this stage closely.

An element of competition give pace to this activity.
