1 Give everyone a name card and explain that this is their name for the activity and that they are going to book a room for the date on their card. Allow a few minutes for people to work out how to say their own date then give everyone a blank calendar. 2 Explain that the aim is to talk to everyone else individually - conducting two separate conversations with each person, once to book a room and once to take a booking. 3 Ask them to circulate telling each other the date/s they need a room as if they were making a phone call, giving their names when asked. Conversations start with Moshi moshi. Yoyaku o onegai shimasu. and continue along the following lines:
4 As they find out the names of the other people and the date they want the room for, they should enter the names and the precise date in their calendars under the appropriate month. Remind them to ask for repetition, etc. in Japanese. 5 At the end of the activity, consolidate by putting a blank calendar on the OHP and asking simple questions to elicit the information to fill it in. Check for accuracy against your master list. The completed calendars can be used for portfolio evidence. You may prefer to separate a very large class into smaller groups for this activity.
1 Divide the class in two and tell them that they are going to take part in an extended version of activity 6.1. Groups A and B, representing two different hotels in Tokyo, start by deciding (without telling the other group) what facilities mentioned in Unit 8 there are/are not in their hotels. They should all make a note of the shared information. 2 Next, revise the kind of polite phrases the receptionists will need possibly making a list on the board. 3 Then arrange the class into pairs, each pair made up of one member from the A and B large groups. Explain that A has two objectives - to ask questions in Japanese to find out as much as s/he can about the hotel e.g. Shokuji tsuki desu ka or Fakkusu wa arimasu ka and to book a room for a number of nights. 4 A starts by asking questions and makes a note of the information given by B. A then books a room and B notes the type of room s/he wants and how long s/he wants it for. B tells A which floor his/her room is on and A makes a note of it. 5 A and B then change roles with B finding out about As hotel and booking accommodation. 6 When the information has all been shared, ask each pair to write out their conversation in full. For evidence of competence, the written conversations can be retained in the portfolio or the conversations recorded onto cassette.
