7.1

Objectives

Practising large numbers and using -hon, -mai and -nin.

Materials
Adobe.gif (224 bytes)

Dice, one per group.
Set of picture cards per group.

Preparation

Photocopy the pictures, preferably on card, and cut.

1 In groups of four, learners use dice to practise random four figure numbers, building numbers according to the throw of the die.

e.g. A throws a 4 and says yon;
B throws a 6 and says yon-jU.gif (83 bytes) roku
C throws a 5 and says yon-hyaku roku-jU.gif (83 bytes) go
D throws a 2 and says yon-sen rop-pyaku go-jU.gif (83 bytes) ni.
D starts the next round.

2 To practice -hon, -mai and -nin, give each group a set of picture cards, face down in a pack, and a die. In turn they pick a card, throw the die and ask for the item on the card x the number thrown, e.g. postcard x 3 hagaki o san-mai kudasai.

7.2

Objectives

Asking and understanding prices in yen, and revising food vocabulary.

Set of picture cards.
Master copy for OHP.

Preparation

Photocopy the pictures on an OHP transparency and also onto card and cut into individual cards. You only need one set.

1 First, use the cards as flash cards to revise vocabulary. It is unlikely that anyone will remember the prices they see.

2 Put the sheet of pictures on the OHP and ask everyone, working individually or in pairs, to complete a shopping list in Japanese of all the items. It is a good idea to cover the prices at this stage. Set a time limit for this part of the activity.

3 Give everybody a different picture card (with classes of 15+, you’ll need to duplicate) and make sure they know they each hold a different card.

4 Explain that they should circulate, asking each other the price of one item at a time, e.g. Ringo wa ikura desu ka. Only the person holding the picture of the apples will be able to supply the answer, others say Ringo wa arimasen.

5 The aim is to be the first to price all the items on the shopping list, to add up the total cost and provide the answer in Japanese.

The shopping list in Japanese complete with correct prices could be used as portfolio evidence.

7.3

Objectives

Producing language needed for shopping and getting used to hearing phrases likely to be heard in shops

Materials

2 x role cards A and B.

1 Divide the class into pairs and give out A and B role play cards, making sure each partner reads only his/her part of the conversation.

2 After a few minutes preparation, ask them to play their roles, with A starting the conversation.

3 When they have finished, they should check that the numbers were relayed and noted correctly.

4 Give out the second role play, reminding them that this time the other partner plays the ‘shopkeeper’.

If the role play is observed and assessed, the cue card could be signed and used as portfolio evidence of competence - for the ‘customer’ only.
