8.1

Objectives

Checking into a hotel.

Materials
Adobe.gif (183 bytes)

Sets of 6 cue cards (3 x receptionist, 3 x guest).
(Two examples given - the numbers on the cards refer to the floor numbers)

1 To prepare, practise a model dialogue below, between the hotel receptionist (A) and a guest (B):

g81.gif (8795 bytes)

1 Give each pair 6 cue cards and explain that they work with one of each role, taking turns to be receptionist and guest.

2 Ask them to practise booking into a hotel according to the details on their cards. B confirms or changes the details suggested by A. A makes a brief note of the actual booking made by B and summarises it at the end of the conversation.

3 When B is happy that the summary is correct, A and B compare cue cards and check the details before changing roles and choosing new cue cards.

4 As a follow-up activity, learners could write up one of the dialogues, either in class working with a partner, or individually at home.

8.2

Objectives

Practice of days of the week, specifically ‘from (Monday) until (Saturday)’ etc., together with practice of some of the language needed to book a room.

Materials

Cue cards with, e.g. ‘from Monday until Saturday’, ‘from today until tomorrow’, written in English – one per learner.

1 Ask your learners to prepare a simple grid with 8 columns and the same number of rows as there are members of the group. Column 1 is headed ‘Name’ and the other seven columns headed Monday, Tuesday, etc.

To practise ‘from today until tomorrow’, etc., you can either highlight a particular day as being ‘today’, or stick to the actual day when the activity is done.

2 Explain that everyone is going to book a room for the days indicated on their cue card and also to take bookings from the other members of the group.

3 Demonstrate the following model conversation:

4 Learners then circulate within their group, practising the dialogue and noting on their chart the name of each person interviewed and the length of stay. The completed chart can be used to check the information.

8.3

Objectives

Asking ‘Can I . . . ?’ in real classroom situations.

Materials

none

1 Present a range of classroom expressions and vocabulary which can be used with ‘Can I . . .? e.g.

g83.gif (3449 bytes)

2 Make sure they know how to respond politely, in both negative and affirmative forms.

3 Make a list on the board and ask everyone individually to decide in advance whether to answer yes or no if a particular request is made to them, and also to choose two questions to ask.

4 Learners circulate and ask their questions, noting how many yes and no answers they receive to each one within a given time limit. Do not let the activity overrun this limit.

Encourage your learners to use these expressions in the classroom from now on whenever appropriate.
