4.1

Objectives

Ordering drinks and snacks.

Materials
Adobe.gif (183 bytes)

Menu with selection of drinks and snacks.
Set of order cards depicting both a drink and a snack, one per learner.
Multiple sets of cards depicting single items from the menu.

1 Set out the room with a number of tables for three or four, as in a cafeteria. It lends authenticity if you also bring in props e.g. trays, teatowels for the ‘waiters’, etc.

Spread out all the individual picture cards on a central table, which will be ‘manned’ by the tutor.

2 Working in small groups, learners take it in turns to be the waiter/waitress for their group. Everyone except the waiter has an order card and they order the items shown on it.

3 The waiter takes the orders of the group (he can note the order in English to remember it), takes the complete group order to the central table and asks the tutor for the items – who then hands out the individual orders requested (single picture cards).

4 The waiter takes the orders back to his table on the tray and then hands them to the appropriate customer, repeating as he does so the names of the items and ‘Here you are’.

The ‘customers’ check they have received what they ordered by comparing their order card with the individual item cards they have been given by the waiter.

4.2

Objectives

Offering, accepting and refusing drinks or snacks.

Materials

Picture cards as in 4.1
Dice (make a die for each pair with yes (in Greek) on three sides and no (in Greek) on the other three sides. Use small stickers to cover the sides of a conventional die or make your own dice from thick card.

1 Practise the following:

G41.gif (1641 bytes)

2 Distribute a small stack of cards to each pair. These are placed face down in a pile on the table.

3 A turns over the top card and offers the item to B as in the above dialogue. B rolls the die and accordingly accepts or refuses the item offered. If he refuses he must turn over the next card to request an alternative drink or snack.

4 A and B then change roles and B offers the item shown.

4.3

Objectives

Vocabulary practice and confidence building.

Materials

none

1 Ask each group to sit in a circle.

2 One person starts by saying ‘I’ll have’ and adding an item of his choice as if s/he were ordering something in a café, e.g.

G42.gif (483 bytes)

The person on his/her left continues by repeating the original order and adding an item of his/her own choice, e.g.

G43.gif (702 bytes)

The activity continues clockwise around the group, each learner adding another item to the order for as long as the learners are able to sustain the orders.

3 The last person starts the next round.

This activity also works very well with the topic of shopping and can be used with more advanced students to practise such things as adjectives, verb tenses and so on.
