Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing
Why are the prices of your videos so much higher than retail shops?
There are two main reasons why videos in the BBC Active range are more expensive than consumer VHS releases:
- The Non Theatric Licence. This gives you the right to use the programme in education & training.
- Duplication Costs. Because our customers' needs vary greatly, it's impossible to predict how much an individual title will be sold. So all of our videos are made to order. This increases duplication costs, but makes it possible for us to offer more titles.
Can I put these programs online, or play them at my event?
You can license these programmes for a variety of educational uses including online learning, festival screenings and museum exhibitions. However, buying the video does not give you the right to do this. You must buy a separate licence directly from us. The costs depend on your exact use. For more information, email us today at bbcactive.bbcstudies@pearson.com.
The programme I watched recently isn't listed here, what do I do?
If a programme isn't listed here that doesn't mean it's not available. Every year, the BBC produces hundreds of programmes that could be used in education and training. We rely on requests from customers like you to make sure we select the best ones. Just send us an email, and will let you know whether it's available. Email us today at bbcactive.bbcstudies@pearson.com.
Is everything broadcast on the BBC available for use in education and training?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. For copyright or other legal reasons, some programmes cannot be cleared for use in education and training.
I watched something a long time ago, but I can't remember the exact details, can you help?
We are pleased to research older programmes on your behalf. Many of our most popular titles have been found in this way. However, we do need you to provide us with as much information as possible - title, subject, date of broadcast, narrator, etc. This type of search can take a long time, so please be patient. Email us today at bbcactive.bbcstudies@pearson.com.
I have an idea for a documentary, what do I do?
BBC Active does not have any direct involvement in what the BBC decides to produce or broadcast. Any programme ideas should be sent to the BBC directly. Please refer to the BBC links section for details about the BBC's website.
I am a student, can I buy one of your videos?
Only personnel from official organisations, or independent teachers and trainers may order videos from the BBC Active. In the past, many students have persuaded their teachers, lecturers or librarians to order our titles. But, unfortunately, students cannot do so directly.
What about licensing this material for other uses?
You can license these programmes for a variety of educational uses including online learning, festival screenings and museum exhibitions. However, buying the video does not give you the right to do this. You must buy a separate licence directly from us. The costs depend on your exact use. For more information, email us to day at bbcactive.bbcstudies@pearson.com.
